Kindergarteners to Explore Marine Life, Habitats

Sea-zing the Day: Students to dive into marine life with a hands-on, sensory-rich experience at Edmonds Beach

Student Grant Recipients Total: 53 students

Estimated Award Amount: $797*

STARS will cover the full cost of the Kindergartener’s Marine Life Study Field Trip, providing them with a fun opportunity to learn about animals and their habitats. This grant award will cover the costs of transportation, a Parks and Recreation Park Ranger Presentation, field guides to help discover local animals in their habitat, a round trip ferry ride to Kingston and cold treats for the students to enjoy before returning to school.

Our  local beach is known for its unique marine life, and will serve as the perfect backdrop for the students’ exploration. Their visit has been planned during a low tide, ensuring that they'll have the best chance of spotting a variety of sea creatures.

To prepare for their trip, the Edmonds Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department will be hosting Ranger Classroom Presentations to help our students understand what to expect and how to make the most of their beach experience . In addition, students will engage in a variety of activities designed to enhance their understanding of marine life. They'll study animal characteristics in science, read non-fiction books about sea animals, and even choose an animal to research as part of the common core informational writing process.

This will also help kindergarteners make connections to what they’re learning in the classroom to what they’re observing on their field trip. Students will be given a Parks & Recreation Field Guide to help them discover local animals in their habitat.

The kindergarteners will also take a ferry to Kingston, where we'll practice our social communication skills and appropriate student behavior.

*Total award amount is an estimate. Final numbers will not be available until all receipts have been submitted and projects completed.
