Pumpkin Patch Science: Learning Grows Outdoors

Kindergarteners explore the pumpkin life cycle through hands-on science at Swan Trails Farm

Student Grant Recipients Total: 54

Estimated Award Amount:  $1,717.43

Kindergarteners experience science in action during a hands-on field trip to Swan Trails Farm, where learning literally grows on the vine. This fully funded STARS grant covers district transportation, farm admission for 54 students and more than 20 chaperones, and a pumpkin for each student to take home.

At the farm, students ride tractors to the pumpkin patch, observe pumpkins at different stages of growth, and see pumpkins harvested straight from the field. Beyond the pumpkin patch, they explore the 45-acre farm meeting barn animals, navigating a hay maze, bouncing on pillows, and even taking a “cornbox swim.”

Back at school, the learning continues with pumpkin-themed classroom activities that connect real-world observations to science and math concepts. Students explore life cycles, measure and weigh pumpkins, test whether pumpkins float, and conduct simple science experiments using baking soda and vinegar.

This experience brings science to life in a joyful, memorable way helping students build curiosity, understanding, and excitement for learning.
