Working to Build a Stronger Phonics Foundation

Creating confident readers with welcoming spaces, shared tools, and take-home practice for students

Student Grant Recipients Total: 53

Award Amount: $763.98

At Edmonds Elementary, our LAP (Learning Assistance Program) supports 53 students in grades K-6 on their journey to becoming confident, lifelong readers. While the district provides foundational phonics materials, our school’s reading specialist has identified additional needs to strengthen our reading community.

This grant aims to create a welcoming, positive learning environment and provide essential resources for student success. Here’s how it will make a difference:

  • Warm and Inviting Spaces: Area rugs will transform Room 12—a former science lab with echo-prone tiled floors—into a cozy, focused learning environment. This will help students concentrate during small group activities and reduce distractions.

  • Alphabet Cards for Mastery: Kindergarten students will receive standardized letter cards for classroom use and home practice. These cards, paired with family-friendly tips, ensure consistent reinforcement of critical letter and sound skills, setting a strong foundation for reading success.

  • Phonics Practice Books: Decodable books will give students access to engaging, skill-aligned reading materials for use in the classroom and at home. This extra practice builds fluency, confidence, and a love of reading.

By fostering a supportive and resource-rich environment, this grant will help all our readers, from kindergarteners mastering their ABCs to older students strengthening their skills.
